Language Development For 0 to 12 Months

By Speech Therapy Teacher

During the first year of life, babies go through several stages of language development as they begin to understand and use language. Here are the stages of language development for 0 to 12 months:

0-3 months:
Infants begin to make cooing and gurgling sounds.
They respond to sounds and voices around them by turning their heads or widening their eyes.
They start to differentiate between the sound of their mother's voice and other voices.

4-6 months:
Infants begin to babble, using consonant-vowel combinations such as "ba-ba" or "ma-ma".
They start to imitate sounds they hear, such as clapping or coughing.
They respond to their name and show increased interest in people talking to them.

7-9 months:
Infants start to understand simple words and phrases, such as "no" or "bye-bye".
They use more complex babbling, using different intonations and inflections.
They begin to use gestures such as pointing or waving to communicate.

10-12 months:
Infants begin to use their first words, usually naming people or objects that are important to them such as "mama" or "dada".
They understand and respond to simple commands such as "come here" or "give me".
They start to combine words or gestures to convey their meaning such as saying "up" while reaching for their mother's hand to be picked up.

It's important to note that every baby develops at their own pace, so these stages are general guidelines and not a strict rule. Some babies may reach certain milestones earlier or later than others.
