Language Development For 12 to 24 Months

By Speech Therapy Teacher

Between 12 to 24 months, children undergo rapid language development as they continue to build their vocabulary, develop their grammar, and refine their communication skills. Here are some key milestones and language development milestones during this period:

Vocabulary growth: Between 12 to 24 months, children's vocabulary grows rapidly. They can learn one to two words per day, and by the age of two, they can usually understand and use around 200 to 300 words.

Word combinations: Children begin to combine words to form simple sentences. At around 18 months, they can use two-word combinations such as "mommy go" or "more juice." As they approach two years old, they may begin to use three-word combinations such as "I want ball" or "daddy go work."

Pronouns: Around 18 to 24 months, children begin to use pronouns such as "I," "you," and "me" correctly in sentences.

Questions: Children start to ask simple questions using rising intonation such as "What's that?" or "Where's mommy?"

Understanding of simple commands: Children can understand and follow simple commands such as "Come here," "Give me," and "No."

Gestures: Children continue to use gestures to communicate, such as pointing, nodding, and shaking their heads.

Speech clarity: At around 18 to 24 months, children's speech becomes clearer and more understandable, although they may still make errors with sounds and pronunciation.

It's important to note that every child develops at their own pace, and there is a wide range of what is considered typical development. If you have concerns about your child's language development, consult with your pediatrician or a speech-language pathologist.
